For a moment, let's replace the concept of videos with the concept of performances.
In the past, people could perform shows by traveling from town to town. This was intimate and fun but it also involved a lot of time getting from place to place, not to mention setting up sest and stages and taking them down when done.
It was time and resource intensive. You were limited by the amount of time and numbers of performers and crew. You can think of this as the equivalent of manual DVD creation, delivery and distribution today.
The public square model
An alternate method was to just throw one big performance in the public main square of a large central town.
People could come from the surrounding areas and view it for free. Everyone could view your performance and there was no way for you to target it to a specific audience.
Well, you could, but they might throw oranges at you if they didn't like it or got bored...
You'd make money by asking for donations or offer other indirect services such as selling food, drinks and souvenirs. You might be competing with other performers at the same time and competition would have been fierce for “eyeballs” plus there could be many local restrictions on what you could and could not do.
This is a lot like the situation that we have today with respect to the “free” video websites like You Tube where you can visit and watch videos.
The entire world can watch your videos which is good and bad at the same time.
Good because you're getting exposure, but bad if everyone else is getting the exact same exposure.
It's also bad if you don't want that material displayed to the general public in the first place.
There are limits and restrictions on what you can upload and display and you must allow anyone and everyone access to your videos.
The theater venue model
Then people developed theaters.
Here were places that people knew where they could consistently find their entertainment!
Theater owners didn't need to go from place to place anymore and had more control of the venues and their environment.
Best of all, it was easier to sell tickets and put up special shows for specific audiences. They could perform more often and stage more elaborate performances.
Security was also easier to enforce and it was simpler to get the money from audience members.
